GBP/JPY Under Scrutiny as UK Faces Economic Challenges and Brexit Reassessment
The British Pound (GBP) against the Japanese Yen (JPY) is under scrutiny as the UK faces economic challenges ahead of its critical Autumn Budget. Former Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane warned the government to curb public spending and avoid painful tax hikes, calling the situation 'thin ice.' The UK's economic performance has shown mixed signals, with the S&P Global UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) improving slightly to 46.1 in September, indicating the least marked downturn in eight months.
Meanwhile, the UK service sector output saw a further upturn, confirming a rebound in business conditions in the third quarter of 2026. However, new order intakes increased only marginally, and job cuts persisted due to rising inflationary pressures. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham admitted that 'Brexit has done more harm than good' and expressed openness to the UK rejoining the EU.
In the US, former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell faced scrutiny over the Fed’s headquarters renovation project. An internal report cited management failures, and President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser called for Powell to leave the central bank. However, the Department of Justice announced it would not reopen its criminal investigation into Powell over the matter. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh and his deputies have avoided sending clear signals to investors about interest rates, maintaining a cautious stance.
Traders are closely watching the GBP/JPY pair, with current daily structure slightly bullish. The level 207.25 acts as strong support, and traders are anticipating a potential breakout. As of the latest data, 62% of traders are long, while 38% are short, indicating a cautious but optimistic market sentiment.
