GBP Rallies as USD Pause Fails to Ease Inflation Concerns
The British Pound experienced some relief on Friday as the US Dollar's rally paused. The GBP/USD rebounded from its daily low of 1.3209, trading at 1.3243. This came despite rising US inflation expectations and elevated Treasury yields.
Investors are pricing in further tightening by the Bank of England (BoE) due to increased inflationary pressures from higher oil prices. The BoE held interest rates unchanged last week but indicated that they could hike if inflation continues to surge. Traders expect 33 basis points of monetary tightening this year, with a 77% chance of a move at the November meeting.
The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for September fell to a four-month low due to rising inflation concerns, which are eroding households' purchasing power. Inflation expectations rose from 4% to 4.6% for one year and from 3.3% to 3.4% for five to ten years.
