GBP Steadies vs JPY as Mixed Signals from UK PMIs Leave Direction Uncertain
The British Pound (GBP) has steadied against the Japanese Yen (JPY), but mixed signals from UK PMIs have left its direction uncertain. The GBP/JPY pair is trading around 209.90, with a modest 0.05% decline on the day.
UK activity data released this week showed a slowdown in services and overall business activity, with the preliminary S&P Global United Kingdom (UK) Services Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) falling to 51.7 in September from 52.5 in August. However, the reading remains above 50, indicating continued expansion.
The manufacturing sector was a bright spot, with the Manufacturing PMI rising to 52 from 51.7 previously and comfortably beating market expectations for a decline to 51.4.
Despite these mixed signals, concerns surrounding UK public finances remain a major headwind for the British Pound. Public sector borrowing reached £18.27B in August, up from £2.04B in July, exceeding the Office for Budget Responsibility's (OBR) projection by £8.1B.
The Japanese Yen remains relatively weak following the Bank of Japan's dovish policy decision last week, limiting the pair's downside potential and discouraging aggressive bearish bets on the Japanese currency.
