GBP/USD Struggles Amid Rising UK Deficit and Diverging Global Markets
The GBP/USD currency pair is struggling to stay above the $1.3350 level, hitting a six-week low due to ongoing U.S. dollar strength and higher-than-expected UK public sector net borrowing.
According to recent data, the UK public sector net borrowing was £18.3 billion in August, exceeding forecasts of around £15.5 billion. This brings the total deficit for the first five months of the fiscal year to £77.3 billion, a significant increase from the Office for Budget Responsibility's forecast.
The higher borrowing costs are putting pressure on Chancellor John Healey as he prepares his first Budget on October 28. The government needs to reassure investors that borrowing remains under control and provide a clear economic plan to address the rising deficit.
