GBP/USD Swings on Stronger UK Growth Amid Ongoing Dollar Strength
The GBP/USD pair is experiencing a modest rise on Wednesday after stronger-than-expected UK GDP data. The Office for National Statistics reported that Q2 GDP was upgraded to 0.5% in the three months to June, surpassing the initial estimate of 0.4%. This growth follows a 0.6% increase in Q1 and solidifies the UK's position as the fastest-growing G7 economy in the first half of the year.
The uptick in GBP/USD comes despite the dollar's advantage, with US yields retreating from multi-year highs. New York Fed President John Williams' dovish remarks and weaker-than-expected US data have contributed to this decline. However, traders still anticipate a 90% probability of the Federal Reserve raising borrowing costs by the end of the year.
Attention will now shift to key US inflation and payrolls data, which could sway the market's expectations for an October rate hike. A strong performance in these areas could lead to increased optimism about the dollar, potentially pulling GBP/USD lower.
