GBP/USD Volatility Persists Amid Central Bank Decisions and UK Retail Sales Data
The Pound-Dollar exchange rate continues to experience volatility as markets digest the latest central bank decisions. On Thursday, GBP/USD traded at $1.3380, virtually unchanged on the day but having struck a seven-week low earlier in the session.
The US Dollar initially edged lower after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, bringing the Fed funds rate to 4%. However, the unanimous decision and hawkish messaging propelled USD higher.
The Pound faced volatility following the Bank of England's announcement, which left interest rates unchanged with a six-to-three vote in favor of holding steady. Although this was broadly as markets expected, it lent slightly on the dovish side.
Looking ahead to the week's close, UK retail sales data could shape Pound movement. Economists forecast a 0.2% decline in sales growth for August, following a 0.5% contraction in July. If these figures align with expectations, another fall in consumer spending may fuel concerns over the strength of the UK economy and put pressure on GBP.
