German Private Sector Growth Slows in August
Germany's private sector growth slowed more than expected in August, according to the HCOB PMI report. The composite index came in at 51.0, below the flash estimate of 51.3 and down from July's 51.5. This reading still points to growth, but the modest slowdown suggests that the eurozone's largest economy is losing momentum as the third quarter progresses.
The services sector continued to drive overall expansion, though at a slower rate than in July. Manufacturing remained in contraction territory, with output and new orders falling further due to weak export demand and high energy costs.
For investors, the data adds to a mixed picture: while the services sector shows resilience, the persistent manufacturing slump raises concerns about the broader industrial base. The European Central Bank (ECB) is closely watching these developments as it weighs its next policy moves.
