Germany's Producer Prices Surge, ECB Rate Hike Fears Intensify
Germany's producer prices saw significant growth in August, far exceeding expectations. According to Destatis, Germany's statistics office, producer prices rose by 4.6% year-over-year and 1.1% from July. This increase is largely attributed to pricier mineral oil products.
The European Central Bank's Consumer Expectations Survey also reported an uptick in household inflation expectations for the next 12 months, rising to 3% from 2.9%. The three-year view increased to 2.9% from 2.7%, and the five-year outlook edged up to 2.5% from 2.4%
The combination of higher 'hard' price data and 'soft' expectations is causing investors to worry that the European Central Bank will maintain interest rates for a longer period. This, in turn, raises the discount rate investors use to value future profits, pushing down price-to-earnings multiples.
