Ghalibaf: Strait of Hormuz Closure Key Driver of US Inflation Expectations
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf has made a provocative claim that US inflation expectations are being driven by supply-side shocks caused by the closure of energy chokepoints, specifically the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab. According to Ghalibaf, these events have rendered interest rate decisions ineffective in managing inflation.
Ghalibaf took to social media platform X to express his view, questioning whether raising or lowering interest rates could reopen the Strait of Hormuz or increase oil production.
In a departure from traditional economic thinking, Ghalibaf argues that US inflation expectations are no longer tied to interest rate decisions. Instead, they are heavily influenced by global events such as the closure of strategic waterways and their impact on energy supplies.
