Ghana Launches Yuan Payment System to Reduce Dollar Dependence in Trade with China

Ghana has introduced a new payment system that allows businesses to settle Chinese imports directly using Ghanaian cedis and Chinese yuan, effectively bypassing the U.S. dollar. The initiative is being piloted by Stanbic Bank Ghana, with the Ghana Commercial Bank also developing a similar service. Payments are processed through China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), enabling direct yuan transactions from cedi accounts.

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama announced the system is already operational, stating that importers can now pay for Chinese goods directly with cedis. China represents about 22 percent of Ghana’s imports in 2024, making this a significant development for trade relations. Kwamina Asomaning, CEO of Stanbic Bank Ghana, highlighted that CIPS offers a more direct payment route to Chinese counterparties, reducing reliance on U.S. correspondent banks.

The new system does not aim to replace the dollar-based SWIFT system but provides an alternative for yuan-based transactions. This move reflects a broader trend of de-dollarization, as countries seek to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar amid concerns over its weaponization in global politics. While the impact on dollar dominance may be limited, the shift could signal growing challenges for the U.S. economy if global demand for dollars declines.
