Gillibrand, Welch to Introduce Tariff Repeal Bill
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) are set to introduce legislation that would require the Trump administration to repeal all tariffs imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act and refund Americans for their costs.
The bill, which has already been introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Brad Schneider, aims to address the tariffs on Canadian goods, including a 50% tariff on Canadian imports.
Gillibrand emphasized that the trade war with Canada hurts New York's economy, as Canada is one of the state's largest export markets for both goods and services, with over $20 billion in annual imports.
The legislation also cites a report from Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee, which found that the average household in New York has had to pay an additional $5,000 for goods and services due to rising costs under President Trump.
