GKI Warns Hungary Faces Major Hurdles in Euro Adoption Bid
Hungary's planned adoption of the euro is set to reshape its medium-term economic outlook, according to the GKI Economic Research Institute. The country's decision to join the common currency will significantly alter the room for maneuver available to policymakers.
The GKI analysis identifies four areas requiring particular attention: the international and geopolitical environment, structural challenges in the Hungarian economy, the state budget, and monetary policy strategy.
Although Hungary currently meets only the Maastricht inflation criterion, market pricing suggests investors expect a quick and relatively smooth transition to the euro. The expected benefits of adoption include lower interest rates, a more stable financial system, and reduced exchange-rate volatility.
However, abandoning the forint would mean losing the ability to respond independently to economic shocks through its own monetary policy. The GKI stresses that euro-area membership creates an irreversible link with the wider monetary union.
