The global markets are experiencing a mixed day, with conflicting signals coming from the US and Iran over efforts to end their five-month-old war. Global markets have climbed as investors weigh a busy slate of corporate earnings. In Canada, Suncor Energy Inc., Dream Industrial REIT, and RioCan REIT are releasing results today.
On Wall Street, major companies such as SpaceX Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Caterpillar Inc., Merck & Co. Inc., Amgen Inc., McDonald's Corp., Arista Networks, Gilead Sciences Inc., Pfizer Inc., and Spotify Technology SA will be reporting earnings. The pan-European STOXX 600 is up 0.41% in morning trading, while Britain's FTSE 100 has risen by 0.24%, Germany's DAX gained 0.52%, and France's CAC 40 slipped 0.07%.
Oil prices have increased as a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran conflict remains uncertain. Brent futures rose by 2.46% to $85.83 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was up 1.78% to $81.77 a barrel.
The Canadian dollar has strengthened against its US counterpart, reaching a day range of 71.09-71.24 US cents in early trading. The loonie was up about 1.17% against the greenback over the past month.
