Global Markets Weather Inflation Storm as Energy Prices Soar
Global markets are grappling with increased inflationary pressures, elevated energy prices, and central bank expectations. In the United States, August's headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.4 percent year-over-year (YoY) and 0.4 percent month-over-month (MoM), in line with market expectations.
The core CPI increased 2.4 percent YoY and 0.3 percent MoM, exceeding the consensus by 0.1 percentage point. The monthly core reading reinforces the view that inflation remains sticky. Elevated energy prices, tariff-related pressures, and firmer monthly core CPI suggest progress toward the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target will likely remain gradual.
The data followed the release of August's final-demand Producer Price Index (PPI), which rose 0.4 percent MoM and 5.4 percent YoY, broadly in line with expectations.
