Leisure Travel Slumps as Las Vegas Faces Economic Headwinds
Las Vegas' economy is facing headwinds as visitor volume remains below pre-pandemic levels, according to LVCVA CEO Steve Hill. In a briefing to state economic forecasters, Hill warned that leisure travel is being impacted by a 30% drop in Canadian visitation and rapid ticket price inflation. Domestic airfares into Las Vegas have jumped more than 20% over recent quarters.
Despite these challenges, the destination's top-line revenues remain strong due to an 11.2% surge in business travelers and high-spending convention delegates using the expanded Las Vegas Convention Center campus. Gaming revenue has reached $8.13 billion through July, running 35% above 2019 trajectories.
However, Hill cautioned that 'we are still gradually losing leisure travelers.' The shift towards more expensive travel is also evident in demographic changes, with visitors from households earning over $100,000 surging by 25%. This has created a bifurcated resort economy, where luxury dining and high-limit gaming are generating historic non-gaming receipts.
