Global Rate-Hiking Cycle Accelerates Amid Iran War Inflation Pressures
The global rate-hiking cycle is gaining momentum as central banks around the world take steps to combat inflation. The Bank of Japan raised interest rates on Friday, following moves by the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank last week. The Bank of England left rates unchanged but hinted that further action may be needed if the war in Iran continues.
The recent collapse of a short-lived pact between the US and Iran has led to increased energy prices, and policymakers are under pressure to show they're prepared to raise interest rates further. ECB Vice President Boris Vujcic warned that inflation could remain high through autumn, affecting household incomes and consumer behavior.
According to sources, a hike at the next ECB meeting in October is possible, but a move in December is more likely. This would be the ECB's third rate hike this year, with rates potentially reaching 3% or higher.
