Gold ETF (ASX:QAU) Crashes Amid Bond Yields Surge
BetaShares Gold Bullion Currency Hedged ETF (ASX:QAU) suffered its worst session in a long stretch as bullion prices plummeted.
The pullback occurred during a broader flight-to-safety session, where defensive sectors fared better than materials and growth-sensitive corners of the market. The move was partly driven by surging government bond yields, which competed with gold for cautious money amid a global fixed income rout.
Australia's government bond yields climbed to levels not seen in roughly 15 years, making it harder for gold to attract investors who prioritize returns. The Australian dollar held broadly steady near the lower seventies against its American counterpart, meaning much of the domestic-currency move in gold mirrored the offshore price action.
The fund's role is to track physical gold bars stored in vaults on behalf of unit owners, offering a currency-hedged route into bullion. This structure makes it a fairly clean proxy for what happened in the bullion market this week, without the complicating effect of foreign-exchange swings.
