Gold Finds Support Ahead of Fed Rate Decision Amid Strong Dollar and High Yields
Gold prices have found support near one-month lows ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision on Wednesday. Despite paring some intraday losses, spot gold remains under pressure from a stronger dollar and persistently high U.S. Treasury yields.
The U.S. Treasury yield, benchmarked by the 10-year yield, climbed to 5.04% on Tuesday before easing back to around 5.015%, its highest level since 2007. This surge in yields has bolstered demand for the dollar and increased the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is trading near a two-week high at 99.63, further weighing on gold prices. The market's expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike have been largely priced in, but if policymakers signal a broader tightening cycle, gold could come under additional pressure.
However, some analysts believe that if higher yields begin to reflect waning confidence in sovereign debt, this could reignite demand for gold as an alternative store of value. Central bank gold purchases, retail investment, and inflows into gold ETFs continue to provide underlying support for gold prices.
