Gold Prices Pare Gains as Markets Digest Fed's Rate Decision

Gold prices pared their gains on Thursday after investors reassessed Chair Kevin Warsh's commitment to restoring inflation to target following the Federal Reserve's decision to leave interest rates unchanged. At 21:01 ET, gold rose 0.2% to $4,074.79 an ounce, having earlier climbed as much as 1.2% to a one-week high of $4,100.42.

Initially, gold rallied after the Fed's decision, with the US Dollar Index retreating and the dollar weakening, making non-yielding bullion more appealing. However, this rally faded as investors digested Warsh's remarks, in which he reiterated the Fed's commitment to returning inflation to its 2% target despite leaving policy unchanged.

ANZ analysts noted that gold initially found support after the Fed held rates steady, with lower Treasury yields and a softer dollar boosting the appeal of the precious metal. However, bullion later surrendered much of those gains as markets concluded policymakers remain inclined to keep borrowing costs elevated while assessing the inflationary impact of the Middle East conflict.

The renewed escalation in the Middle East kept oil prices elevated, with persistent strength in energy markets reinforcing concerns that inflation could remain sticky, complicating the Federal Reserve's path toward easing monetary policy. Investors now await Thursday's US Personal Consumption Expenditures price index for fresh clues on the inflation outlook and the likely path of interest rates.
