Gold Prices Stabilize Ahead of Warsh's Jackson Hole Debut
Gold prices have stabilized around $4,595 an ounce after experiencing a brief pullback. This comes as traders lock in profits ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole speech on Friday.
The price drop follows gold reaching its highest level since mid-May, but the market mood has cooled down. The July personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index came in at 3.7% year-on-year, unchanged from June, which keeps the debate about interest rates ongoing.
Gold's appeal is limited by its lack of interest payments, making it less attractive when investors can earn higher inflation-adjusted returns in bonds. The US Treasury's plan to increase buybacks of older long-dated bonds also reduces the amount of long-maturity debt in the market and limits longer-term yields.
The market is waiting to see how Warsh addresses these concerns, with a hawkish stance on inflation potentially lifting real yields and supporting the dollar. On the other hand, a more bond-market-sensitive approach could have an opposite effect on gold prices.
