Gold Prices Surge on US Interest Rate Outlook Reassessments
Gold prices continued their upward trend on Tuesday, August 11, as investors reassessed the US interest rate outlook ahead of key inflation data. The precious metal rose to $4,484.30 per ounce on COMEX, a gain of $64.60 or 1.46% from the previous close.
Silver also moved higher, increasing by 2.03% to $66.595 per ounce. The surge in bullion prices comes as markets have reduced expectations of another US Federal Reserve rate increase following weaker-than-expected labour market data. The US economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, while the unemployment rate eased to 4.1% from 4.2% in June.
The Fed's next policy moves are now in focus, with investors looking for signs of whether inflation is cooling enough to give the central bank more room to adjust interest rates. A softer inflation reading could strengthen expectations of lower rates and support gold prices, while a stronger-than-expected reading could put pressure on those expectations.
