Gold Surges Above $4,400 Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty
Gold prices have surged in recent days, pushing above $4,400 per ounce. The rise can be attributed to ongoing geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the conflict between the US and Iran, as well as concerns about the future direction of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy.
The situation around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for energy raw materials transportation, is also adding to investor anxiety. As a result, some investors are moving funds into safe assets like gold.
Central banks have been significant buyers of gold in recent months, with 289 tonnes purchased in net terms during the second quarter, a 62% increase year-over-year. This trend is expected to continue as central banks seek to diversify foreign exchange reserves and reduce dependence on traditional reserve assets, particularly the US dollar.
However, the path to new highs for gold may not be without obstacles. The development of US yields, the dollar exchange rate, and expectations related to further Fed actions will be crucial in determining the short-term direction of gold prices.
