Gold Tumbles Below $4,200 as Oil Prices Surge
A recent surge in crude oil prices has reignited inflation worries across financial markets, causing gold to drop below $4,200. The metal's price declined by 2.9% on Monday, with spot bullion briefly slipping beneath the $4,200 threshold during Asian hours. This comes as traders await Friday's jobs report, which is expected to bring clarity to the Federal Reserve's next policy decision.
The rise in oil prices has pushed energy costs higher, feeding into expectations of further Fed tightening and eroding the appeal of assets that pay no interest, such as gold. The 10-year Treasury note yield rose to roughly 5.21% in early dealings, making fixed-income alternatives more attractive than a metal that offers no coupon.
Tim Waterer of KCM Trade pointed out that the one-two punch of rising oil and climbing yields is bearing down on bullion right now. The dollar's concurrent strength has also made dollar-denominated gold more expensive for overseas buyers.
