Gold's Strategic Role in Portfolios Unchanged Amid Near-Term Volatility
UBS commodity and currency analysts argue that gold is more than just a tactical response to the next Federal Reserve decision. Despite recent pullbacks, they believe gold remains a valuable portfolio diversifier, particularly for investors who favor real assets.
In a note on Tuesday, UBS analysts wrote that the Fed's expected 50 basis point rate hike this year will likely put pressure on gold prices in the near term due to higher real yields and a stronger US dollar. However, they do not think this diminishes gold's strategic role in portfolios.
UBS highlights several factors supporting gold prices over the medium term, including strong central bank demand, with nearly 90% of surveyed central banks expecting global official gold reserves to increase over the next 12 months. Fiscal concerns and a gradual shift away from concentrated US dollar exposure are also expected to reinforce the long-term trend of diversification into alternative assets.
Gold helps insulate investors' portfolios against inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, according to UBS analysts. They note that persistent inflation and geopolitical risks have historically boosted gold's performance as a portfolio hedge and diversifier.
