Goolsbee Sounds Alarm on US Demand Growth, Warns Higher Interest Rates Ahead
Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee has expressed concerns about the US economy's demand growth, warning that it could lead to higher interest rates. In a recent forum in London, Goolsbee stated that if demand continues to overheat, there will be no ambiguity about how the Federal Reserve should respond - raising interest rates.
Goolsbee noted that substantial investments in artificial intelligence could increase total output beyond what the economy can absorb, leading to inflation. He also emphasized that supply shocks are affecting inflation for longer than expected and cannot be ignored when making monetary policy decisions.
The Federal Reserve's target is 2% inflation, but recent estimates show it at 3.7%. Goolsbee believes that bringing inflation down would require raising interest rates, which could have a painful impact on economic growth and employment.
