Greece Seeks EU Greenlight for Energy Resilience Investments
Greece has requested that the European Commission activate an escape clause to bolster its energy resilience amid growing concerns about energy security. The move, announced by Economy and Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis on Thursday, aims to strengthen Greece's energy system and accelerate its transition away from fossil fuels.
The additional investments enabled by this measure are expected to exceed 1 billion euros by 2028, according to the Ministry of National Economy and Finance. The funds will be sourced from national resources and excluded from the EU's economic governance framework ceiling on net primary expenditure until 0.6% of GDP is reached in 2028.
The planned investments will include renewable energy storage projects, energy efficiency measures, building upgrades, and infrastructure projects designed to improve Greece's energy resilience. Specific projects will be selected in cooperation with the relevant ministries in the coming period.
