Greece Tops EU in Online Shopping on Chinese Platforms
Greek consumers are among the most enthusiastic users of Chinese retail platforms in Europe, according to a recent European Central Bank consumer survey. Four out of five (80%) Greek respondents said they have used platforms like Shein and Temu, ranking them first among 11 member-states surveyed. In contrast, only just over 50% of eurozone consumers on average use such platforms.
The strong preference for cheap Chinese products may also explain the overcrowding at Athens airport, where customs duties are now charged at €3 per product due to a recent change in regulations. Until recently, parcels up to €150 passed duty-free, which allowed many low-cost imports from China to arrive without being taxed.
The European Commission is taking measures against the surge of Chinese products on European markets, citing concerns about unfair competition and potential risks for consumers and the environment. In addition to price, minimal competition from other platforms in southern European countries may also be a contributing factor to their popularity.
