Guantánamo Residents Outraged Over State-Run Ice Cream Sold Only in U.S. Dollars
The Guantánamo State Dairy Company has sparked outrage after announcing that its Anacaona brand chocolate ice cream would be sold exclusively in U.S. dollars at El Panchito store, a CIMEX branch in the city.
The announcement on social media was met with sarcasm and anger by hundreds of residents, who pointed out the contradiction of a state-owned enterprise selling its products in a currency inaccessible to most workers.
'Perfect for family sharing,' the announcement declared, but critics highlighted that the dollar pricing would place the product beyond the reach of many Cubans.
Maydalis Quintana Creagh, identifying as a doctor, asked: 'How can we, the workers, the people, doctors like me who earn in national currency and on a card, purchase this?'
