UK Chancellor John Healey gave an upbeat assessment of the country's economy in a speech on Monday, saying it is 'turning a corner' despite concerns about government debt. The chancellor announced a £150m fund for companies in the north of England as part of a plan to spread economic growth across the UK.

Healey emphasized that his focus will be on economic growth and increasing opportunities for businesses, rather than making big pre-Budget warnings about higher taxes or spending cuts. However, he acknowledged that borrowing costs are 'too high', which is putting pressure on public finances ahead of the Budget on October 28th.

Some critics have expressed skepticism about Healey's plans, with Helen Miller from the Institute for Fiscal Studies saying it would be difficult to achieve economic growth in every postcode. Rupert Harrison from Pimco also noted that the UK has lost credibility with bond markets due to its handling of fiscal responsibility in recent years.
