The European Central Bank (ECB) presidency succession has begun to gain momentum despite Christine Lagarde's official term not ending until October 2027. Spanish economist Pablo Hernández de Cos and Dutch Klaas Knot are among the leading candidates, with both having received backing from their respective governments.

Hernández de Cos, who served as governor of the Bank of Spain from 2018 to 2024 and currently heads the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), has a strong technical profile and experience in monetary policy. He is also known for his ability to reach consensus and has European credentials.

The election will be conditioned by geographical, institutional, and monetary balances of the European Union, making it a complex political agreement among member states. Lagarde's succession will not only affect her position but also other leadership positions within the ECB, including the departure of Luis de Guindos from the vice-presidency in May 2026.
