The European Central Bank (ECB) presidency race has started to gain momentum despite Christine Lagarde's mandate not officially ending until October 2027. Pablo Hernández de Cos, a Spaniard and former governor of the Bank of Spain, is among the top contenders alongside Dutch Klaas Knot.

Hernández de Cos' technical profile and experience at the helm of the Spanish central bank have made him a strong candidate for months, with experts highlighting his ability to reach consensus and his European credentials. In April, a survey by the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF) ranked him as the most highly regarded candidate to occupy the presidency of the ECB.

Lagarde officially maintains her mandate until 2027, but rumors about an early departure have been circulating since the beginning of the year. If she were to leave before her term ends, it would trigger a complex political agreement among member states to determine her successor.
