Hungary's Euro Adoption Delayed Until At Least 2033
Hungary's plans for adopting the euro by 2030 have been dealt a significant blow, according to Equilor Investment Plc, the country's oldest brokerage firm. Analysts at Equilor predict that Hungary can introduce the euro no earlier than 2033, with meeting public finance criteria being the main obstacle to entry.
Equilor lead analyst Péter Aradványi explained that while Hungary failed to meet any Maastricht convergence criterion last year, favourable inflation trends and a falling country-risk premium have made it possible for the price-stability condition to be achieved. However, he emphasized that consistent economic and monetary policy is crucial for this path to succeed.
Aradványi also noted that Hungary's exceptionally high interest burden on public debt will likely push the budget deficit to 7.5% of GDP this year, pushing public debt to 77.5%. He stated that successful fulfilment of the deficit criterion will depend heavily on adaptation by domestic and foreign companies.
