Iceland Rejects EU Membership Referendum Amid Fishing Rights Concerns

Icelandic voters have rejected a referendum to reopen negotiations for EU membership. The decision protects the voices of Icelanders who value their fishing waters, which they believe would be at risk if the country joined the European Union. The government had presented the referendum as a 'now or never' moment, with Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadóttir warning that voting 'no' would put the membership question aside.

The issue of EU membership has been debated on and off for decades in Iceland, which first applied to join the EU in 2009 when it was hit by a financial crisis. The country's central bank interest rate is 8%, compared with 2.25% at the European Central Bank. Supporters of rejoining the EU have said that membership could bring relief from high inflation and expensive mortgages.
