IMF Appoints Isabel Schnabel as Financial Counsellor and Director of MCM Department

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced her intention to appoint Isabel Schnabel as Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) at the International Monetary Fund, effective January 4, 2027.

Schnabel currently serves on the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), where she is responsible for market operations, research, and statistics. She has played a central role in the ECB's response to the pandemic, the 2022 energy price shock, and periods of financial market stress.

Georgieva described Schnabel as a highly distinguished economist and policymaker with deep expertise at the intersection of central banking, capital markets, and financial stability. She praised Schnabel's intellectual leadership in research and practical policymaking, her collaborative leadership style, and commitment to developing talent.
