IMF Prescribes Rate Hikes and Spending Cuts for Australia
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a policy prescription for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), warning that it should remain prepared to raise interest rates further as needed due to persistent underlying inflationary pressures and uncertainty about whether financial conditions are sufficiently restrictive.
The IMF lowered its 2027 economic growth forecast for Australia to 1.6%, citing the increased likelihood of another interest-rate hike by the RBA as the primary reason.
Following the conclusion of its annual consultations with Australia's Treasury, the Reserve Bank of Australia, and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, the IMF issued a concluding statement noting that the RBA should stand ready to raise interest rates at any time if necessary.
