India and Canada Vow to Boost Ties Amid Trade Talks Progress
India and Canada are working to strengthen their relationship, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced after meeting his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand at the UN General Assembly. The two countries have been making progress in normalizing ties since the new Canadian government took office last year.
Jashankar described the discussion with Anand as 'productive' and stated that they are preparing to take their relationship 'to a higher level'. This comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney mentioned that India is expected to visit Canada around December this year, with Ottawa making good progress in trade negotiations.
India and Canada had agreed at the G20 last year to conclude their trade talks by this year. The goal is to more than double bilateral trade to 70 billion Canadian dollars annually by 2030.
The relationship between India and Canada has been improving since Carney took office in March 2025, following a diplomatic row during Justin Trudeau's tenure that led to reciprocal expulsions of diplomats and a reduction in personnel.
