Indonesian Rupiah Heads for Third Weekly Decline Amid Strong Dollar
The Indonesian rupiah is struggling to move away from its recent high of IDR 18,000 per US dollar as it heads into a third consecutive weekly decline. The greenback remains strong, holding near an 18-month high due to expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening and elevated inflation. Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti attributes the rupiah's pressure to global conditions, shifts in capital flows, and weaknesses in external-sector fundamentals.
The recent surge in food prices, partly linked to El Niño effects, contributed to a three-month high headline inflation rate of 3.28% in September. Traders are now looking forward to next week's release of foreign-exchange reserves, consumer confidence, and August retail sales data.
