Indonesian Rupiah Strengthens Against US Dollar Amid Interest Rate Expectations
The Indonesian rupiah has strengthened against the US dollar in trading on Wednesday, reaching Rp17,857 per USD, up from the previous closing of Rp17,884 per USD. This increase is attributed to Bank Indonesia's (BI) potential to maintain interest rates at 5.75 percent during its Governor's Council Meeting (RDG). Analyst Saudara Rully Nova from Bank Woori notes that the rupiah's strengthening is influenced by domestic results of the RDG BI decision, which is expected to hold the benchmark interest rate.
Rully predicts that the rupiah will continue to strengthen in the range of Rp17,830-Rp17,880 due to BI's expected hawkish attitude. He mentions that global pressure from the Fed's more hawkish policies, a strengthening US dollar, geopolitical uncertainty, and high oil prices have contributed to the current market conditions.
Globally, Rully notes that oil prices are showing a downward trend, which is pushing down the dollar index and US government bond yields. This development has further supported BI's potential to maintain interest rates at 5.75 percent, thus contributing to the rupiah's strengthening.
