Inflation Cools, Rate Hike Odds Fall as Dow Drops Nearly 444 Points
The US inflation rate cooled in August, coming in below market expectations at 3.4% year-over-year. This easing of inflationary pressures has reduced the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October from 51% to 35%, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply on Wednesday, closing 443.87 points lower at 50,906.05, its lowest level in over three and a half months. The S&P 500 Index slipped 0.25% to 7,651.54, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.24% to 26,861.06.
The cooling inflation data has provided some relief for investors, but analysts caution that further rate hikes before year-end cannot be ruled out. The upcoming release of the US September nonfarm payrolls report will play a crucial role in determining the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates.
