Inflation Gauges Cool Down: Kroger, Simon Property Group, and Procter & Gamble Face New Challenges

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauges are starting to cool down, which may reshape the risk and reward balance for consumer and retail stocks. As a result, companies that rely on steady consumer demand could benefit, while those that lean on aggressive price increases might be pressured. Among these, Kroger (KR) is an interesting case due to its reliance on fuel and core goods inflation.

Kroger generates $148.6 billion in revenue from retail operations in the US, with a market cap of $35.4 billion. The company has been investing heavily in digital tools like AI Shopping Assistant and expanding through acquisitions, such as the planned Giant Eagle deal. Its private label offerings can appeal to shoppers looking for value, but Kroger also carries high debt and has experienced recent earnings volatility.

Simon Property Group (SPG) is another large real estate investment trust that owns premium malls and outlets across North America, Europe, and Asia. It generates $6.3 billion in revenue mainly from its real estate portfolio and has a market cap of $87.6 billion. Simon Property Group's cash returns and high-quality assets can look appealing, but the company also carries meaningful leverage.

Procter & Gamble (PG) is a global consumer goods company that sells everyday household and personal care brands. It generates most of its revenue from Fabric & Home Care, Baby, Feminine & Family Care, Beauty, Health Care, Grooming, and Corporate. Procter & Gamble has high margins, strong brands, and a long dividend record, but the current setup is more fragile than it appears.
