Inflation, Not Interest Rates, Devastating Australia's Most Vulnerable
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised interest rates to a 15-year high yesterday, but it's inflation that's taking its toll on Australia's most vulnerable citizens. Dr Jerry Nockles, chief executive officer of Catholic Social Services Australia, said inflation is the 'crushing weight' on these families.
Inflation is eroding people's purchasing power and forcing them to choose between essentials like food, electricity, and rent, according to Dr Nockles. He emphasized that while rising interest rates make mortgage repayments harder, it's inflation that's the daily burden for many families.
The RBA governor Michele Bullock attributed the high inflation to domestic capacity pressures, higher energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East, and a surge in demand due to the artificial intelligence boom. She also noted that fuel prices are beginning to trickle into other goods and services.
