Inflation Soars as Gas Prices Skyrocket Amid Middle East Conflict
US inflation rose to 3.4% in August compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Labor Department. This marks a return to the same level of inflation seen in July.
The monthly increase in inflation was more significant, with prices jumping 0.4% from July to August. Excluding food and energy costs, core prices rose 2.4% year-over-year, but increased by 0.3% month-over-month.
The uptick in inflation is attributed to rising gas prices, which have been fueled by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The average cost of a gallon of gas has surged over 7% from last month to $4.30. Other price increases were seen in hotel room rates, airfares, and new and used cars.
The Federal Reserve is likely to consider these figures when deciding on interest rate hikes. Some Fed officials are pushing for a rate increase at the upcoming meeting next week, while others may be swayed by the core inflation figure, which has been trending downward.
