Inflation Surge and Energy Shock Wipe Out European Stock Gains
European stocks struggled to find direction on Wednesday as investors faced another round of inflation and economic data. The pan-European STOXX 600 was broadly flat after rising as much as 0.7% earlier in the session, while Germany's DAX and Britain's FTSE 100 gave up their early gains.
The latest numbers showed price pressures accelerating across several major European economies, with consumer prices increasing more quickly than expected due to higher energy costs. Germany's annual inflation rate rose to 3.3% in September, while France reported an even sharper acceleration, with preliminary annual inflation reaching 3% compared to 2.4% previously.
Economists expect Eurozone headline inflation to reach around 3.6% in September, up from 3.2% in August. The official reading is due on Friday and could become one of the most important numbers for European markets this week.
