Inflation Surge Pushes UK Rate Above Target
UK inflation accelerated to 3.1% in July, surpassing the Bank's target of 2%, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This marks a 0.5 percentage point increase from June and is just 0.2% lower than the highest figure year-to-date, which was 3.3% in March.
Motor fuel was the primary driver of this rise, with energy shock feeding through to household costs. Grant Fitzner, ONS Chief Economist, attributed the increase to sharp price rises for petrol and diesel, as well as higher airfares, particularly for long-haul journeys.
Industry experts weigh in on the impact of inflation, with James Burgess from Atradius UK warning that persistent inflation is creating financial strain for businesses, especially in sectors such as agriculture and retail. Mike Randall, CEO of Simply Asset Finance, cautions that rising costs and uncertainty may undermine SME confidence, while Neil Rudge, Chief Banking Officer at Shawbrook, highlights the critical role medium-sized businesses play in absorbing higher input costs.
Vikki Brownridge from StepChange Debt Charity expresses concern about households struggling with finances due to long-term stagnation in wages and real-terms cuts to benefits. With prices rising again, she warns that households may face further difficulties, particularly when it comes to essentials such as food and energy.
