Inflation Surges to 4% in Australia Amid Interest Rate Hike
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released figures showing that inflation jumped to 4% in August, up from 3.5% in July. This increase comes just a day after the Reserve Bank raised the cash rate to 4.6%, the highest it's been in 15 years.
Trimmed mean inflation, which excludes the top and bottom 15% of goods and services, held steady at 3.6%. Housing was one of the largest drivers of inflation, rising 5.7% over the past 12 months due to increasing costs for new dwellings and electricity.
Transportation costs also rose, with fuel prices increasing by 14.8% in August compared to July. Governor Michele Bullock acknowledged that the timing of the inflation figures was unfortunate but noted that the Reserve Bank's decision-making process is typically scheduled months in advance.
