Inflation Surges to Four Per Cent as Oil Prices Bite
Australia's annual headline inflation rate has risen to four per cent, driven by higher oil prices and a surge in fuel costs.
The consumer price index increased by 0.4 per cent in August, with housing contributing the largest share of this growth, up 5.7 per cent on an annual basis.
Economists point to sustained high oil prices as a key factor driving inflation, with prices expected to remain elevated into next year.
Despite repeated interest rate increases by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), some experts believe that other approaches should be considered to tackle inflation.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock attributed high inflation to excess demand in the domestic economy, while former governor Philip Lowe pointed to excessive government spending as a contributing factor.
