Infrastructure Capital Advisors Raises S&P 500 Target on Earnings Growth
Infrastructure Capital Advisors CEO Jay Hatfield shared his outlook on U.S. markets, Federal Reserve policy, and economic trends during a recent discussion. The firm remains optimistic about the bond market, believing investors may be overestimating further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Hatfield described the Fed's first rate increase as "completely irrational" and expects no more than one additional hike.
On inflation, Hatfield noted the decline in core CPI and emphasized deflationary trends in the housing sector, suggesting recessionary conditions are already present. He contrasted this with continued spending by hyperscale technology companies, which he believes could offset some economic weaknesses, leading to slower rather than sharply negative growth.
Hatfield also discussed the relationship between Treasury yields and equity valuations. Infrastructure Capital Advisors has adjusted its valuation multiple from 23 to 20, reflecting the impact of higher interest rates. Despite this reduction, the firm has raised its S&P 500 target by 300 points, citing earnings growth as the primary driver.
The firm maintains a positive stance on fixed income, actively purchasing U.S. Treasuries through its macro hedge fund. Hatfield argues that recent bond yield increases may have been excessive if inflation continues to moderate and the Federal Reserve eases its aggressive stance. Upcoming economic data, including CPI figures, corporate earnings, and labor-market data, will be critical in shaping this outlook.
