Iran War Sparks Oil Price Spike, Benefiting Canadian Energy Producers

The ongoing war in Iran has led to significant disruptions in global energy markets, causing oil prices to spike. Canadian energy producers are benefiting from this environment due to their assets' stable jurisdiction and long-life production profiles.

According to a recent analysis, companies like Canadian Natural Resources, Tourmaline Oil, Methanex, Pembina Pipeline, Topaz Energy, and Keyera are generating significant free cash flow in this environment. Their share prices have been strong but not as high as oil prices due to currency fluctuations and historical discounts between Canadian heavy oil and American light sweet crude.

The Strait of Hormuz closure has removed 13-15 million barrels a day from the market, making it supply-driven rather than demand-driven. This has caused higher energy prices to impact raw material costs for various products, including cement, steel, transportation, and freight. A stronger Canadian dollar will also make exports less attractive.

The base case for markets is that the conflict resolves within a few months, with the West Texas Intermediate oil price stabilizing between $70-$80. However, there is a remote-but-potentially-big-impact risk of a protracted closure of the Strait, which could tip the economy into recession if energy prices persist.

The liquified natural gas (LNG) and natural gas markets are also affected, with LNG prices more than doubling through this crisis. Missile damage to Qatar's LNG infrastructure will be a 3-5 year project, making it a structural issue for the LNG market through the end of the decade.
