Maria Callas and Evros River Featured on New Euro Banknote Designs

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten proposed designs for the next generation of euro banknotes, featuring six influential figures from European arts and history, including Greek opera singer Maria Callas.

The new series will display the word 'euro' in Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts, marking a continuation of Greece's distinctive contribution to the common currency. The designs aim to illustrate Europe's cultural development across centuries, from the Renaissance to modern European society.

The €5 note will feature Maria Callas, while the other denominations include Ludwig van Beethoven (€10), Marie Skłodowska-Curie (€20), Miguel de Cervantes (€50), Leonardo da Vinci (€100), and Bertha von Suttner (€200). Each banknote will incorporate objects, manuscripts, and locations associated with the individuals and their achievements.

The second theme, 'Rivers and Birds,' shifts the focus to nature, connectivity, and environmental protection. The Evros River in Greece will be featured on the €50 note, alongside Spain's Guadalquivir, representing Mediterranean Europe and major wetland environments.
