Iranian Airlines Grounded Worldwide as US Enforces Secondary Sanctions
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Monday that from September 23rd all Iranian airlines will be shut down worldwide.
This is a result of secondary sanctions targeting companies that provide services to these airlines, including fuel suppliers, ground handlers, and ticketing companies.
The sanctions are aimed at cutting off Iranian carriers' access to the US dollar financial system, which is critical for international operations.
Mahan Air has been under US designation since 2011, and Treasury says it received at least three Boeing 777s this summer routed through the UAE and Oman.
The move is part of 'Operation Economic Outcast', a campaign to isolate Iran's aviation sector, with 27 Iranian airlines designated under Executive Order 13902.
